Our business name, Bottom Feeder Emporium, was actually was my daughter’s idea. She saw an interview with the founder of OVERSTOCK. He told the interviewer that they were told to be sharks in business practice. He found his business not on the idea of being a shark, but on being a bottom feeder feeding on the left over of other companies, who had gone out of business or needed to liquidate stocks. It seemed to me a better way to do business, after all the bottom feeders always survive upheavals when the sharks frequently do not survive. We are a mother and daughter team looking for quality pre-owned merchandise through estates sales, auction houses and other outlets, for resale primarily on eCommerce. Our business officially started in 2003 and was located in Golden, Colorado. We dabbled in renting space in other resale outlets in the Denver by renting space in Antique Malls and selling out of consignment stores, which gives new meaning in learning the ropes. We soon realized that it was getting a little crowded in the Denver metropolitan area for us mountain folks and could easily continue our business in more appealing area. We finally found the San Luis Valley. Sadly, the traditional brick and mortar store front has become a challenge for small business especially in the San Luis Valley. Is the Valley unique in this shift? No, it is happening nation wide. We have been here for over 5 years and have seen our fellow small business owners open their doors and in short time close them for good. However, we believe the small business still survives in the Valley through eCommerce. |
